Am 28.5.2002 von Atlanta nach Memphis. Dort blieb ich bis zum 3.6.2002 auf den Spuren von Elvis. Zwischendurch mit dem Leihwagen nach Nashville. Stop bei der Hall of Fame, wo auch Buddy verewigt ist.
On the 28th of May, 2002 from Atlanta to Memphis. I stayed there up to the 3rd of June, 2002 visiting Elvis. During that time with a rental car to Nashville. Made a stop at the Hall Of Fame, where Buddy Holly is one of the inductees.
Abflug am 3.6.2002 18 Uhr nach Dallas. Weiter nach Lubbock, Flugzeit 1 Stunde. Ankunft 22 Uhr Ortszeit in Lubbock. Am Flughafen habe ich das Lubbock Inn Hotel ausgesucht. Ein Shuttle Fahrzeug holte mich ab.

A shuttle bus took me to the hotel of my choice.
Kenne Sherry Holley seit dem Jahre 2000. Habe im Film "The Real Buddy Holly Story" von Paul McCartney den Bus von Larry Holly gesehen, auf dem die Firmenadresse vermerkt war. Schrieb daraufhin an Larry. Hatte damals noch keinen PC. Irgendwann kam ein Brief von Sherry, sie schrieb, dass ihr Vater im Moment viel zu tun habe. So entstand ein reger Briefkontakt.
I know Sherry Holley since 2000. In the film "The RealBuddy Holly Story" I saw the address of the Holley Tile Company on Larry Holley's bus. As I did not have a PC, I sent him a letter and got a reply from his daughter Sherry telling me that her father was busy, therefore she answered instead of her father. This was the start of a permanent mail contact.

06-04-2002 at 10 a.m. I had a telephone contact from my hotel with Sherry.
She and her husband will pick me up at 6 p.m. to eat something in the famous HI-D-HO.
Um 14 Uhr kam Larry Holley zu mir in's Hotel. Wir haben uns bei einem Kaffee lange unterhalten. Er signierte mein Buddy Holly Buch, ging mit auf mein Zimmer, signierte dort meine Gitarre und sang und spielte zwei Lieder.
Hierüber habe ich ein Videoband. Wurden vom Pieper unterbrochen, seine Frau rief an wegen einer Tornadowarnung. Larry verließ daraufhin mein Hotel und fuhr nach Hause.
At 2 p.m. Larry Holley came into my hotel. We had a long conversation while drinking a coffee. He signed my Buddy Holly book, then we went into my room, there he wrote his autograph on my guitar and sang 2 songs for me.
Because of a sudden tornado warning he left the hotel earlier as expected
to drive home. I have a video tape of Larry singing in my hotel room.
Um 18 Uhr kamen Sherry und Tom.
Ich gab Sherry zwei Wangenküsse, wie ich es so gewöhnt war.
Sherry war ein wenig überrascht.
At 6 p.m. Sherry and her husband Tom arrived.
I gave her two cheek kisses, that's normal for me, but I think she was a little bit surprised.

When Jochen was here in Lubbock, my husband Tommy and I took him out to eat at The Hi D Ho Restaurant. While we were in the Hi D Ho, the clouds started getting darker and darker, and it looked as if a tornado might be approaching. This was a scary thing for all of us.
In 1970 a tornado went through town and destroyed the original Hi D Ho and I remember that my Granddad Holley was in the hospital down town at the time. They said the hospital building actually shook.
So, I wasn’t ready for another episode of tornado weather. I think I was more scared of tornado type weather than my husband or Jochen when he was here.
We took Jochen back to the motel and went straight home. Fortunately, it did not come a tornado, and it only came a thunder storm. I also enjoyed a beautiful clock that Jochen had brought to us from Germany.

Am Donnerstag den 6.6.2002 um 10 Uhr fuhr ich zum Buddy Holly Center, anschließend zur Buddy Holly Statue, wo ich ein Lied sang und spielte. Habe darüber ein Video.
Thursday, 6th of June. My 60th birthday. At 10 a.m. I drove to the Buddy Holly Center, then to the Buddy Holly Statue. In front of the statue I played a Buddy song and I sang it, too in loving memory. I have a video in full length.
Hier lebte Buddy. Heute erinnert nur noch ein Schild daran. Dennoch wurde das Geburtshaus durch einen glücklichen Zufall gerettet. Die Baubehörde der Stadt Lubbock hatte Anfang 1978 das Haus zum Abriss vorgesehen.
Ein Käufer des Grundstücks durchkreuzte diesen Plan unwissender Bürokraten, die von der Bedeutung des Hauses, das den größten Sohn der Stadt beherbert hatte, schlichtweg keine Ahnung hatten. Der Käufer war an dem Haus interessiert, das er, wie das in den USA gang und gebe ist, mit einem Tieflader an eine andere Stelle außerhalb der Stadt bringen ließ, wo er es aufstellte, damit er und seine Familie einziehen konnten.
This is the former place of Buddy's first home. The lot is empty now. In 1978 the house was scheduled for demolition.
The Lubbock Building Department had no idea that they wanted to destroy the house of the town's most famous son. But by accident, Buddy Holly's birthplace was saved. A man bought the place, moved it, just as it was, to another place outside the Lubbock city limits and fixed it up. Not knowing that he had saved such an important house, he and his family moved in.

Back to the Buddy Holly Center in the afternoon. Great music from a group that was performing there.
Um 20 Uhr zu Sherry, habe als Gastgeschenk eine Kuckucksuhr aus dem Schwarzwald dabei. Ihr Mann Tom zeigt mir das Haus. Sherry zeigt mir Familienphotos und ihre Arbeiten. Dann mexikanisches Essen von Sherry zubereitet. Leider gibt es hierüber keine Photos. War zu aufgeregt, habe an Bilder garnicht gedacht. Zum Abschluß gab es Schokoladenkuchen. Später am Abend zurück in mein Hotel. Larry will mir ein Tape als Geburtstagsgeschenk geben. Für Sonnabend wieder verabredet.
I did not take a photo of the German clock that I gave Sherry and Tommy as a guest gift, but this photo shows you a similar one, well known and very famous all around the world from the "Schwarzwald", the Black Forest.
At 8 p.m. I visit Sherry and her husband Tom. As a guest gift I have the traditional "Kuckucksuhr" from the German Black Forest for both of them, they love that unusual watch. Tom shows me the house. Sherry presents some family photos and her artwork, tile murals of a wonderful quality. Then we eat Mexican food created by Sherry herself. I'm so sorry that I did not make any photo there, but I was so excited, I forgot about making a snaphot. We finished dinner with a chocolate cake. Later that night back to my hotel. Sherry's father Larry has announced to give me a tape as a birthday present. Next meeting will be on Saturday.

Erreichte gerade noch rechtzeitig das Norman Petty Studio, der Verwalter wollte gerade zum Essen fahren. Wir gingen zusammen in das Studio, dort konnte ich alles sehen, mit ergänzenden Worten des Verwalters, der auch Buddy kannte, war in sämtlichen Räumen, bis auf das Echozimmer, das im anderen Gebäude liegt. Machte Videoaufnahmen und zum Schluß kam noch David Bigham dazu, der mir eine Fankarte gab und signierte, lernte auch seine Frau kennen, sie wohnen beide in einem Nebengebäude des Studios.

I reached the studio just before lunchtime. It was wonderful to have a look at all the gems and memories there. Some time later I met David Bigham from the Roses and his wife, he gave me a fan card with his autograph. Great moments in my life.

Saturday, 8th of June:
Once again to the Lubbock Cemetery, saying goodbye to Buddy. At 11 a.m. a concert in the Center, great performance.
Also there: Miss Texas and Miss Lubbock. Filmed by a TV team.
Miss Texas und Miss Lubbock sowie ein Fernseh-"Mogul" aus Dallas waren auch anwesend. Das Fernsehen machte Aufnahmen. Zurück im Hotel Kontakt mit Sherry aufgenommen, sie muß länger arbeiten, aber Tom will mit mir weggehen.Schlechtes Wetter macht unserem Vorhaben ein Ende. Es regnet in Strömen. Treffen fällt aus.
Back in my hotel I had a telephone call with Sherry. She's still busy working for her company, but Tom wants to go out with me. But because of the bad weather, it was raining cats and dogs, the meeting was cancelled.

Sherry und Tom kamen um 19 Uhr zu mir in mein Hotel, brachten ein Tonband von Larry für mich mit, nach 15 Minuten Verabschiedung, da ich morgen wieder zurück nach Deutschland fliege.

Sherry and Tom came into my hotel at 7 p.m. and brought me a gift from Larry Holley, a tape with songs that he had sung. They stayed 15 minutes and wished me a good flight back home to Germany on Monday.
