LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Lubbock legend will make history in Hollywood. It was announced on Thursday that Buddy Holly will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
A dedicated fan started a Facebook group, petitioning to get Buddy a star. Kevin Magowan talked to Buddy's widow, Maria Elena, about spearheading an effort to get Buddy a star and she agreed. He also asked music giants to help out.
"The star costs 25,000 dollars that has to be paid for…so I went to Buddy Holly's old record company Universal Music group, and his two publishing companies which is NPL, Paul McCartney's company, and other company Pier Music. I got them to agree each to split the $25,000 fee in thirds," says Magowan.
Out of the first ten musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Buddy was the only one who didn't have a star yet.
"It's way overdue and it's certainly deserved because there are certainly so many people in this world who feel that Buddy Holly actually wrote the book on rock and roll," said local musician Mike Pritchard.
Don Caldwell is a local music producer. He's seen lots of talent rock and roll through Lubbock. He thinks Buddy Holly's star will get people to turn their attention to the music scene on the South Plains.
"Having Buddy Holly's name on something that is that prestigious I think does bring attention to Lubbock," Caldwell continued. "[People say] oh yeah that's that kid from Lubbock, Texas. The more we can get the name Lubbock, Texas out the more opportunity that people will look at what's going on in Lubbock," Caldwell said.
There has not been an official announcement on when Buddy Holly will receive his star. Magowan told us he'd like to see it done sometime near his birthday in September. This year the Hollywood Walk of Fame is handing out two stars rather than just one. Magowan said that is a rarity. Music legend Louis Prima, will also receive a star this year.
