By then we had headed off to Lubbock where Buddy’s 72nd birthday was
celebrated at the BH Center. John Mueller did an informal tribute set before
a very appreciative audience.
Barry Holley besuchte das Grab von Buddy Holly an dessen 72. Geburtstag. Es war sein 3. Besuch dort und zum 3. Mal stand er allein vor dem Grab.

Then we checked out Buddy’s grave once more; nearby we spotted the recent memorial to English fan, Dave Tobin, who had worked so tirelessly at the Center and the Clovis Festival. This was our third visit to Buddy’s grave; strangely each time we have had the cemetery entirely to ourselves.
Then back for birthday cake and Bill Griggs’ tour of the Center’s exhibits. By then only a few punters were left and we were almost outnumbered by the celebs! Bill prompted Jack Neal to tell us a story about Buddy. Apparently there was a dangerous intersection near Jack’s home and his mother had asked the city in vain to put up ‘go slow’ signs. So one night Jack and Buddy dug up two STOP signs from another junction and installed them at Jack’s crossing. Sure enough it did the trick; soon after a storm blew down one of these signs and council workers came along and repaired it without demur!
Tommy Allsup was also on hand to reminisce about recording and touring with Buddy. His new book of memoirs, out soon, should be a fascinating read.
Gary and Ramona Tollett recalled that momentous session at Clovis which produced ‘That’ll Be The Day’.
Bill remarked that Buddy played a Fender Stratocaster paid for by his brother, Larry. ‘True’ said Travis Holley ‘but I taught him how to play it!’ Travis is a frequent visitor to the Center’s weekly summer gigs and is very happy to chat with fans.
The next day we again had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Sharon and Bill Griggs discussing Buddy, the Big Bopper, next year’s Clovis festival and the state of the universe in general!
Altogether it was a terrific few days of meeting, greeting and eating to a background of the big beat which still goes on, thank goodness!

Travis remarked that Larry had bought Buddy his first Fender Strat,
but then Travis said he taught him all he knew about playing it!
Travis merkete an, dass Larry derjenige war, der Buddy seine erste Fender Stratocaster Gitarre gekauft hatte, aber er es war, der im alles beibrachte, wie man dieses Instrument spielen muss.
