The Crickets - Six Decades of Rock ‘n’ Roll Memories
The first and only book about the iconic Rock ‘n’ Roll band The Crickets, from their early days with Buddy Holly, into the 1960s and right up to the present day.
Many books have been written about The Beatles & The Rolling Stones but NEVER a book about the group that influenced both bands ………..until now.
Gary Clevenger ( US ) & Tony Warran ( UK ) have taken the last two years with their project - The Crickets - Six Decades Of Rock ‘n’ Roll Memories ( 592 pages ).
The book contains RARE photos and STORIES from many fans plus interview with all the main The Crickets including JI , Joe B, Sonny, Keith Allison, Gordon Payne, Glen D Hardin, Buzz Cason and many many others.
The ACTUAL book is available for US $30 ( US ) & UK £ 21.03 equivalent and is available from Create Space – Amazon print on demand
I decided to order the print version. No possibilty to get it via Amazon Germany, but I succeeded to make an order on Amazon UK. Although I'm an Amazon Prime customer in Germany, they did not know me in the UK. So I had to buy the book with my credit card. To my surprise the book arrived in a packing from Amazon Germany. I was umable to see that this parcel was sent from the UK. It arrived in good condition. A real 'heavy weight' !

The 1959 “Winter Dance Party” tour was a rocking success as it wound its way through the Midwest. Its headlining performers — Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson (aka "The Big Bopper”), 17-year-old Ritchie Valens, and Dion and the Belmonts — were packing them in wherever they went. Imagine Adele, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and One Direction jumping on a heaterless bus today after agreeing to entertain throngs of teenaged fans. Such was the drawing power of the Winter Dance Party … only with better music.
Driving from Midwestern town to town can prove to be a harrowing experience, especially in January and February. Yet that was the scenario as Holly and company made the rounds, eventually pulling into a diner on the last Saturday in January after they had just completed a concert at the Duluth Armory that evening.
As luck would have it, they encountered at least one young fan who was in the diner at the same time. In the presence of those pioneering musicians, that fan … our consignor … had the courage to walk up to their table with the only paper surface around — a placemat — and secured gorgeous ink signatures from Holly, Valens (adding “Best Wishes from”), and the Big Bopper (adding a desirable “Hello Baby!), as well as Dion DiMucci (“Love, Dion”), Carlo Mastrangelo (signing “Love Carlo Belmonts”), and Frankie Sardo (adding “Love + kisses”). Sardo was another teen heartthrob advertised as an “Extra Attraction” on the tour.
With that, the young fan went on her way and the musicians crawled back into the cold air and onto their bus. No one knew how quickly the exuberance stemming from that brush with greatness and the tour in general would turn to heartache. Two days later, after the February 2nd show at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly chartered a plane to take him on to the next stop. His temporary bandmate, Waylon Jennings, and musician Tommy Allsup were supposed to fly as well, but an under-the-weather Big Bopper and Valens took the flight instead, while the Dion and the Belmonts frontman passed because he thought the plane fare was far too expensive. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, February 3, the aircraft crashed on its way to Fargo, North Dakota, just a few minutes after taking off. The pilot and all three passengers were killed. Their deaths were immortalized a dozen years later in Don McLean's folk anthem “American Pie” and came to be known as “the day the music died.”
This placemat has been in the possession of its original owner since the day she had it signed and she has recently decided that a future generation of music fan should carry on the stewardship of this unique and timeless treasure. Measuring 9 ¾” x 7 ½”, there is an approximately 3” square that has been cut out of the lower right portion of the placemat and a small ½” x 3” area which has been removed from the upper left corner. Six small areas of tape residue appear from when this piece was housed in a scrapbook and could likely be removed by a paper conservator. It goes without saying that it is almost impossible to find anything signed by these three music legends on the same item. This placemat, destined to become the cornerstone of any true music aficionado’s collection, is a particularly poignant remembrance of the sudden and tragic deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper. Accompanied by a letter of provenance provided by the consignor, the original recipient of this scarce memento, as well as a full letter of authenticity from James Spence Authentication/JSA.

Hologram USA announced that they have licensed the likeness of rock 'n' roll legend Buddy Holly and the Buddy Holly hologram will go on tour in 2016. The actual tour will start in Texas and then move on to travel the entire world, putting on a concert that hasn’t been seen since Holly died 56 years ago.
While this is called a hologram, it likely will be just like the Tupac concert, and it isn’t really a hologram at all. For people familiar with magic tricks, the visual is just CGI animation bounced off mirrors to make it look like it is floating in air. The process is a 19th century trick called “Pepper’s Ghost” and shot out onto an expensive screen to make it look like a 3D hologram. Of course, this doesn’t really change the fact that it looked cool and pretty realistic.
At a cost of around $400,000, it seemed to be a lot of money for a one-shot appearance, but it all lead to this. Maria Elena, the widow of Buddy Holly, said she was excited that fans will get to see Holly live in concert for the first time in over five decades. She said it was dedicated to Holly’s fans around the world. There was no word on what she is being paid to allow this show to happen.
With the actual tour, this show will give the company a chance to make back the money they will pay to put him up on the stage. It was a smart move to have the first part of the tour hit the state of Texas. Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas in 1936 and got his start in the Texas music scene until Nashville caught his eye. Holly is considered a pioneer of rock and roll and influenced everyone from The Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bob Dylan.
Buddy Holly died in 1959, at the age of 22. He was in an airplane crash along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. The plane crash and death of the legends was memorialized in the Don McLean song “American Pie.” There are no official dates set for the shows but the Texas tour will kick off in 2016.

Board Member Peter Bradley, Junior said “We are delighted that Mr. Hubert has agreed to serve on the Foundation Board, and share in its twin missions to promote Buddy’s legacy and support Buddy and Maria Elena’s dream of furthering musical education for young people, regardless of creed, ethnicity or income.” Mr. Hubert said: “Buddy Holly is truly one of the founding fathers of rock ‘n’ roll. What is all the more extraordinary is that he completed this tremendous body of work by the time he was 22. Maria Elena and his fans can be assured that BMG and I take our responsibility to preserve and develop the Buddy Holly legacy extremely seriously. I am so pleased that I will be able to assist the Foundation to accomplish its important goals of promoting Buddy’s legacy and encouraging musical education.” Stephen Easley, Counsel to the Foundation said “As a part of the deal, BMG will not only contribute to the Foundation’s efforts, including sponsorship of one of the Foundation songwriting retreats that benefit the next generation of songwriters who look to Buddy Holly for inspiration, they will also endow a University scholarship in Buddy’s name.” Maria Elena Holly said: “I am so happy that BMG’s efforts will now allow me to devote more time and energy to my role as a Board Member of The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation.” The Foundation Directors and its members look forward to sharing that next chapter with this great lady."
Feds asked to reopen probe into fatal 1959 plane crash
Mar 04, 2015 1:30 PM EST
The National Transportation Safety Board reportedly is considering re-opening its investigation into the 1959 plane crash that killed rock and roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. The Des Moines Register reports that a New England man named L.J. Coon, who claims to be a retired pilot and aircraft dispatcher, petitioned the NTSB to take a second look at the case.
The Civil Aeronautics Board, the NTSB's predecessor in air crash investigation, ruled that the primary cause of the crash seven miles north of Clear Lake, Iowa, was pilot error and poor weather conditions. However, Coon told the Register via email that he wants investigators to consider whether problems with the plane's rudder pedals caused 21-year-old pilot Roger Peterson to lose control of the plane. He theorized that Peterson may have tried to glide the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza to a landing before the plane's right wing hit the ground, sending it cartwheeling across a cornfield.
Peterson was the fourth person to die in the crash, along with the musicians.
"I believe that the NTSB will review pilot Peterson's diagnostic actions in the aircraft during this 3.5-minute flight and realize the heroic efforts that took place in those 4.9 miles," Coon wrote.
The NTSB responded to Coon in an e-mail dated Feb. 19, 2015, and read in part "You have gotten our attention."
A final decision on a re-investigation could take several weeks.
"Our cases are never closed, and we get these from time to time," NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss told the Register. "The key is if there is new information not previously considered by the board."
The crash has been immortalized in books, movies, and music, with Don McLean's 1971 hit "American Pie" christening Feb. 3, 1959 as "The Day The Music Died."

A GUITAR used by rock and roll legend Buddy Holly on his only UK tour has made a return to Bradford. The rare instrument, a Hofner President, was used by Holly to write songs and practise for the 1958 gigs, which included a week-long run at Bradford's Gaumont Theatre, latterly the Odeon.
At the end of the tour, Holly gave the guitar to entertainer Des O'Connor, who had shared the bill as compere and comedian, who sold it to the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation (BHEF) in 2010.
The guitar was briefly back in Bradford before it is taken to Lubbock in Texas, US, by Peter Bradley junior, BHEF's board director, to be put on display at the Buddy Holly Centre.
"Bradford was one of the gigs Buddy played with Des, so it was great to take the guitar and get some pictures at a venue it was actually used," said Mr Bradley, of Harrogate.
When Buddy Holly and the Crickets began their stint at the Gaumont Theatre on Monday, March 10, 1958, the performance drew a scathing review from Telegraph & Argus critic Peter Holdsworth.
He noted the "fanatical reception" received by the band, but labelled Holly a "screeching guitar player" and "a foot-stamping, knee-falling musician".
I bought the .mp3 album version from amazon Germany.
Many thanks to my true friend Gandalf from Lubbock TX for submitting the news !
The Paul McCartney concert scheduled for June 14 in Lubbock is now sold out.
Select-a-Seat sold all remaining tickets in an hour after they went on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday morning.
The capacity for the concert is set at 11,500.
There are still VIP packages available for the concert with prices that range from $470 to $2000 per person. Anyone interested in purchasing one can call 770-2000.
About 340 people also attended the wristband lottery drawing for the tickets at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Friday morning.
Select-a-Seat is the only authorized ticket vendor.
Texas Tech University and the City of Lubbock held a press conference on April 16 at the Buddy Holly Center concerning legendary singer, songwriter, Paul McCartney's scheduled appearance in Lubbock June 14.
Texas Tech officials such as TTU System Chancellor Kent Hance and Texas Tech President Duane Nellis along with Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson and other city representatives made the announcement as a collaborative effort between Texas Tech University and the City of Lubbock.
Chancellor Hance commented that this event would be a sellout before it even started while Mayor Glen Robertson said that McCartney himself reached out and expressed his desire to play in Lubbock.
McCartney, who will turn 72 this year, gained worldwide fame as a member of The Beatles. He has long credited Lubbock native Buddy Holly as one of his biggest musical influences.
In a 1974 interview, John Lennon said the name of The Beatles was "directly inspired" by The Crickets.
During the British Invasion "every group tried to be The Crickets," Lennon said.
We are proud and delighted to announce that on the 6th of March 2014, Roger Daltrey, one of the finest Rock vocalists and most exciting frontmen of any era, will be joining the brilliant Pete Townshend, [It's So Easy guitar] his legendary co-founder of one of the world's greatest ever bands The Who, as TBHEF Lifetime recipient of the Oh Boy guitar.
Heartbeat Radio, a station now available on Shoutcast, features Buddy Holly's 24/7, Matt Burley, the new station's program manager, told Vintage Rock 'n' Roll Examiner on Aug. 3. "The station will feature the complete Buddy Holly catalog, songs by musicians that influenced Holly, such as Elvis Presley and Little Richard and rare interviews with Holly and the Crickets," Burley told us.
He said the station will also include covers of Buddy Holly songs by current musicians that pay tribute to Holly's music today and shows how he still influences the music of today.
I had a look at my local newspaper, the Dortmund RUHR NACHRICHTEN, today.

Cliff Richard Releases 100th Album 'The Fabulous Rock 'N' Roll Songbook' On November 11th 2013
"This is my tribute to the artists who took Rock 'n' Roll to the top of the charts. I loved Rock 'n ' Roll then and I still love It. " - Cliff Richard
Released: 11 November 2013 on Rhino Records
Cliff Richard, the UK's all-time greatest hit-maker, releases his 100th album 'The Fabulous Rock 'n' Roll Songbook' on 11 November 2013. This new studio album of 15 great rock 'n' roll tracks was recorded live at the Blackbird Studio and The Parlor in Nashville, Tennessee, and is Cliff Richard's tribute to the greats of rock 'n' roll who inspired and influenced him, such as Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly.
The Fabulous Rock 'N' Roll Songbook sees Cliff Richard, one of the UK's first great rock 'n' rollers come full circle and sing heart-felt new versions of 'iconic' songs such as Teddy Bear (Elvis Presley), Rave On (Buddy Holly), Johnny B Goode (Chuck Berry), Rip It Up, (Little Richard), Dream Lover (Bobby Darin), Wake Up Little Susie (Everly Brothers) and Dream Lover (Bobby Darin). His 100th album release also features a brand new track One More Sunny Day. The first single to be taken from the album will be Rip It Up - this will be Cliff's 140th single release.
Cliff Richard said about recording the album: "It was like being back in the 50's with The Shadows in Studio 2 at Abbey Road - only it wasn't The Shadows, and it wasn't Studio 2 and it wasn't the 50's. I was in Nashville, Tennessee at the Blackbird Studio with five great Nashville musicians and we were recording....LIVE."
Cliff Richard said: "This was my chance to pay tribute not only to (in my humble opinion) one of the greatest advances in musical history, but also the artists who took Rock 'n' Roll to the top of the charts World-wide. As with all great art forms Rock 'n' Roll did not stand still and there have been some phenomenal changes, bringing it to where we are now. All I know is that "in the beginning" what kicked the whole thing off was THE FABULOUS ROCK AND ROLL SONG BOOK. That whole period was new and unbelievably exciting, and to think that I was there!! Saving up my pocket money for weeks so that I could buy Elvis's first album - borrowing someone else's collection of Little Richard (my name in part, was a tribute to him) and skipping school so as to get seats to see Bill Haley play live."
The Fabulous Rock 'N' Roll Songbook is produced by Steve Mandile and Eddie Healy is Executive Producer.
The track-listing is as follows:
01. Rip It Up 02. Wake Up Little Susie 03. Poetry In Motion 04. Sealed With a Kiss 05. Stood Up 06. Such a Night 07. School Days 08. Teddy Bear & Too Much (medley) 09. Don't Let Go 10. Dream Lover 11. Stuck on You 12. Fabulous 13. Rave On 14. Johnny B. Goode 15. One More Sunny Day
Over 2,000 guitarists set record singing Buddy Holly
Over 2,000 guitarists have rocked their way into the record books by performing Buddy Holly classic to celebrate his 77th birthday.
A beach in Lyme Regis, Dorset hosted 2,267 guitarists as they simultaneously played Holly favourite Rave On.The group performed to a crowd of thousands and even received a special message of support from singer's widow Maria, who said in a message read out to the crowd: "Please accept my gratitude and love and also give my love and good wishes to everyone participating. Continue to Rave On with Buddy Holly."Her rock and roll husband was born on September 7, 1936, and would have turned 77 today, but died in a plane crash in 1959 while on tour. The world record for the biggest ever band is currently held by a 6,000 strong group who played Jimmy Hendrix's Hey Joe in Poland, in 2009.
I am giving everyone a special on my “Buddy” Limestone tile pen/ink watercolor art piece through Aug 31, 2013. I am selling these for $217.00 plus s/h. They are normally $250.00 plus s/h. The tiles come from my Dad’s retired business “Holley Tile Co”. A lot of people didn’t know that Buddy actually worked for my Dad when he was alive, setting tile. There is a building here in Lubbock that Buddy worked on.
Please check out the attached pic. Hope all is well this summer.
By the way I can do different colors for the background colors.
Thanks everyone.

"He was a great and innovative musician. He was a 'MASTER.' His influence continues..." - John Lennon, 1974PR Newswire
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30, 2011
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- September 7, 2011, marks the 75th birthday of the great Buddy Holly. In only 18 months, from when Buddy Holly and the Crickets hit the charts with their first release, "That'll Be The Day," to when he died in a tragic plane crash, Holly topped the charts with more than 27 Top 40 hits worldwide, with "That'll Be The Day" going to No. 1. Even after his death, Holly went to No. 1 with "It Doesn't Matter Anymore." From rock to country to R&B, Holly's songs have charted consistently for more than 50 years, proving that his music and his influence continue today. Brian Wilson said it simply: "Buddy Holly is unique... his music matters because it is timeless."
Holly died on February 3, 1959, often referred to as "the day the music died," the event some believe was immortalized in the 1971 song "American Pie" by Don McLean. But even in his short time, Buddy Holly changed the sound and look of rock 'n' roll forever, leaving a permanent standard that continues to influence artists all over the world. As Jackson Browne recently said: "That wasn't the day the music died…it was the day the music became immortal."
Holly was raised on country and bluegrass music and started in a duo known as "Buddy & Bob" until Elvis Presley's fired-up rockabilly sound pointed him in the direction he would create, master and define. The Texas native then blended blues and R&B into his own style, resulting in some of the most innovative music ever recorded.
In an era when most artists performed songs penned by others, Buddy Holly and his band were one of the first four-piece rock 'n' roll band (two guitars, bass and drums) that wrote, arranged, played and recorded their own songs in the studio. Instead of using studio musicians, they put out their music, their way. With this seemingly simple change, Holly created a new blueprint for past, present and future rock 'n' roll bands around the world.
Holly also was one of the first artists to tour with his band as a self-contained unit performing his hits before live audiences and on national television shows around the world. He captivated U.S. audiences with repeat performances on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing his hits "That'll Be The Day" and "Peggy Sue" on their first appearance, and "Oh Boy" on their second.
Before there was a British Invasion led by the Beatles in America in 1964, there was an American Invasion led by Buddy Holly in England. In 1958, Holly toured England for a month playing over 50 performances. He appeared on the two top TV shows, "Sunday Night At the Palladium" and "Live At The BBC." These personal appearances and TV broadcasts were the first exposure of an American rock and roll band to the youth of England. After bleak post-war years, Holly's energy and style triggered a musical revolution in England and seeded the British Invasion that took place six years later in 1964.
The Beatles took their name in tribute to Buddy Holly and the Crickets. When it came down to the business of learning how to work with the mechanics of writing songs, Holly's pure-and-simple three-chord melodies and "words of love" were a major influence and inspiration to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Notably, five years to the day after Holly was buried, on February 7, 1964, the Beatles landed at JFK Airport in New York City and ushered in the British Invasion that changed popular music forever. Peter (Asher) and Gordon, who were inspired by Holly from the moment they formed their duo, made Holly's "True Love Ways" a worldwide hit a year later. Holly's legacy has been enduring and meteoric ever since.
Had Holly lived, he would have been 75 on September 7th.
This notable day serves as the backdrop and the launch of a year-long celebration of his music and his musical legacy. To start this celebration, on the eve of Holly's 75th birthday Verve Forecast and Songmasters release Listen to Me: Buddy Hollyon September 6, 2011.Produced by the GRAMMY® Award-winning Peter Asher, a diverse group of leading contemporary artists from three generations recorded their favorite Buddy Holly songs. Asher encouraged these artists to create a modern authentic rendition by adding their own artistic signatures. Rock legends such as Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Jeff Lynne, Stevie Nicks and Jackson Browne are joined by contemporary artists The Fray, Zooey Deschanel, Patrick Stump, Cobra Starship, Imelda May, Natalie Merchant, Pat Monahan and Chris Isaak. The one and only Eric Idle, of Monty Python fame, has also contributed a track. Each has created a track that continues the artistic evolution of Holly's music, both true and new.
On September 7 – Buddy's birthday – will be officially declared "Buddy Holly Day in Los Angeles." Holly's much-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will be unveiled as a permanent public monument to this iconic artist. The event will be star-studded in many respects, including a rare appearance by Maria Elena Holly (Holly's widow) speaking on his behalf, along with Phil Everly, Peter Asher, Gary Busey and surprise guests that are expected to honor a true legend. Phil and Don Everly (Everly Brothers) were close friends of Holly's and played many shows together. Peter (Asher) and Gordon, who were inspired by Holly from the moment they formed their duo, made Holly's "True Love Ways" a worldwide hit. In 1978, Gary Busey starred as Holly in The Buddy Holly Story and was later nominated for an Academy Award® for his portrayal. The film won the Academy Award® for Best Adaptation Score.
Later that evening, the celebration moves to The Music Box in Hollywood for a special invitation-only concert and birthday party with special guest performances of Holly's music by many artists who have been influenced by and love Holly's music, as well as friends and family members from Holly's life. The concert event will be filmed in HD for a PBS special airing in December 2011. Artists confirmed include: Paul Anka, Michelle Branch, Chris Isaak, Lyle Lovett, Raul Malo, Graham Nash, Stevie Nicks, Boz Scaggs, Patrick Stump and more.
The celebration continues through to the spring of 2012 with many activities meant to remember and extend other key elements of Holly's legacy. Not only an outstanding artist, he was a visionary in the business of music, having created the first label, called Prism, to promote independent recording artists. His widow, Maria Elena Holly, has remarked that Buddy was committed to helping young artists succeed, as he had. To this end, this year-long celebration continues with several programs supporting the development of the next generation of music's greats--both as artists and as entrepreneurs. Three music industry charities - The GRAMMY® Foundation, the Songwriters' Hall of Fame, and Artists House Music -- will benefit from this celebration hosted by Songmasters and its partners.
Holly continues to be an essential component of rock 'n' roll's historical catalog as seen from the continuous sales of his Buddy Holly: Millennium Collection, which is the No. 1 seller of the Holly catalog, and recently released Buddy Holly: ICON. More than fifty-two years later, new fans continue to discover the genius of Holly and his accolades continue to grow. This year, Rolling Stone magazine positioned Buddy Holly as No. 13 on their "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" poll. Today, Holly's classic recorded music catalog is managed by Universal Music Enterprises (UME). Ringo Starr recently remarked, "In all of rock 'n roll history, he's in the top 10!"Buddy Holly's remarkable legacy is a reflection of the true artistry, vision, heart, and hard work that catapulted him to achieve not only great success, but to also leave an indelible stamp on popular music that thrives to this day.

Twenty-five years after being among the very first recording artists inducted into Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the late Lubbock recording artist Charles Hardin “Buddy” Holly finally will be honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He is the very last in the inaugural class at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to receive a Hollywood star. Holly’s star will be located near those of the Beatles, and both Phil Everly and Peter Asher are expected to speak at the star unveiling ceremony.
Two artists, instead of the usual one, were approved for the posthumous honor this year: Louis Prima and Holly.
Another 28 living entertainers also were chosen. John Pavlik, chairman of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, said, “It was not an easy job to winnow down the extra large number of nominations this year to reach these 30 names, and many deserving names were left for future consideration.”
The star unveiling ceremony for Holly will take place at 11:30 a.m. (1:30 p.m. Central time) on Sept. 7, the 75th anniversary of Holly’s birth in Lubbock.
Maria Elena Holly, Buddy’s widow, said she has been asked many times why it has taken so long for him to be honored with a Hollywood star. After all, more than 2,440 stars can be found along the 15-block stretch of Hollywood Boulevard and three additional blocks on Vine Street.
A nomination process is involved, and Maria Holly said, “I just thought, for me to do it, that is, for me to nominate Buddy, it would look tacky.
“I really thought that Paul McCartney’s company or Buddy’s record company would do it. I would hear from them that there were plans, but then they (plans) just disappeared. But I am a patient woman...”
An average of 200 nominations are received each year.
Maria Holly now credits Kevin Magowan, 55, an individual Holly fan who works in the music business in Los Angeles, for making this particular star ceremony happen.
She said that Magowan called her first to ask for permission to work on the project.
It was Magowan who labored to put together a submission package, essentially making a case for Buddy’s eligibility. He then contacted Ana Martinez, who oversees star ceremonies for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
Anyone, including fans, can nominate an entertainer, provided they include a letter of agreement from either the celebrity or their representative. Posthumous nominees must have been deceased at least five years; Holly died in the crash of a private aircraft on Feb. 3, 1959.
A $25,000 fee also was expected at the time of selection, the funds being used for creation and installation of each 300-pound star, and also for general maintenance of the Walk of Fame.
Again, after first asking permission from Maria Holly, Magowan approached three companies, asking if they would be interested in splitting this cost: Paul McCartney’s MPL Communications, which owns publishing rights to most of Holly’s songs; Peer Music, which also published Holly’s music; and Universal Records, Holly’s record company.
All three agreed.
Magowan, upon receiving approval for the star ceremony to take place on Sept. 7, approached the Los Angeles City Council, which agreed to designate that day “Buddy Holly Day in the City of Los Angeles.”
Together, Magowan and Maria Holly explored potential available sites for the star.
Martinez confirmed that Holly’s star will be located close to 1750 Vine St., in front of the historic Capitol Records tower.
Maria Holly recalled a conversation in which she told Magowan, “Buddy did not record for Capitol” and he responded, “No, but the Beatles did.”
McCartney said the Beatles’ name was inspired by Buddy Holly and the Crickets.
If one walks south-to-north on Vine Street, said Magowan, consecutive stars honor the names of Wink native Roy Orbison, John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, a blank space and then Buddy Holly.
The blank space is being held for Paul McCartney, who has not yet revealed a date when he can be available to witness his star being unveiled.
Just like the West Texas Walk of Fame in Lubbock, it is mandatory that any living honoree must make a personal appearance at his or her unveiling ceremony.
According to Martinez, Holly’s star also is adjacent to those of Vera Ralston and Beverly Sills.
Martinez indicated a CD of Holly’s music will be played prior to the ceremony, which is open to the general public at no charge.
“Yes, they can bring cameras,” she added, “and early arrival is suggested.”
As many as three entertainers might speak at the ceremony, said Magowan, but the two confirmed are Everly and Asher.
Everly was one of Holly’s best friends and served as a pallbearer at his funeral in Lubbock following the plane crash that claimed his life.
Magowan said, “The Everlys also are credited with getting Holly and the Crickets out of blue jeans and T-shirts and into designer suits.”
British musician Asher became a Holly fan as a teenager before finding fame in 1960s duo “Peter and Gordon,” which had a hit with Holly’s “True Love Ways.”
According to Magowan, Asher is credited with discovering James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, and producing Holly songs as hits for each: “It’s So Easy,””That’ll Be the Day” and “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” for Ronstadt, and “Everyday” for Taylor.
Asher also produced a new Holly tribute CD called “Listen to Me: Buddy Holly,” expected to be released on Sept. 6, the day before Holly’s birthday and star ceremony.
Martinez said that the star unveiling ceremony will be emceed by Leron Gubler, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

Nash enjoys highly successful careers with both music, photography

Graham Nash never suffers from writer’s block.
One of the reasons also finds him paying Lubbock a visit Sunday, specifically his long-developed interest in photography.
The Buddy Holly Center presently is exhibiting a 95-photograph exhibit titled “Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock ’n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash.”
It will remain on display through Sept. 11 and, more to the point, Nash will discuss the exhibit via a 6 p.m. gallery talk Sunday.
His gallery talk is open only to museum members.
“I was once asked how does a rock musician take such good photographs,” recalled Nash, speaking from his Hawaii-based home.
“A stupid question, really. Because it is all just energy. If I am collecting, working on a photograph, writing a song, it’s energy.
“I never have writer’s block because I can always switch to something else. I have a conveyer belt in my mind. I might be working on 13 songs at the same time.”
He laughed and said, “I don’t like to drive, because I tend to space out in the car. It’s not uncommon for me to sit up and say, ‘Oh (darn), that goes there!’ And my wife, who is driving, just assumes I am working on a project. It’s all just energy to me.”
But so much of Nash’s makeup is dictated by his roots.
He was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, but, when World War II ended, his family moved back to their hometown of Salford, Lancashire (now part of Greater Manchester).
Buddy Holly
The future for most young men there is in the mills or the mines. But Nash happened to be a leading member of pop band The Hollies, one of the 1960s British invasion groups.
As best Nash can recall, it was fellow original member Bobby Elliott who decided to pay tribute to Buddy Holly with the band’s name.
Nash did not have to have his arm twisted.
“I loved Buddy Holly,” he said, “because Buddy was one of us. He was one of the people. He wasn’t like Elvis, out shaking his ---. Buddy even wore glasses, for (darn’s) sake.
“I was 17 years old. My friend Alan Clark and I had been out singing. When I learned Buddy was killed, it was my birthday. I remember just sitting down by the street, crying my eyes out.
“Because Buddy was gone.”
(Nash was born Feb. 2, 1942. The plane carrying Holly crashed shortly after midnight, so Holly died Feb. 3.)
Less than a decade later, Nash began falling in love with America.
He arrived with the Hollies in the United States on Easter weekend 1965. They had been asked by Maurice Levy, with Roulette Records, to perform at the Paramount in New York City.
Nash said, “Immediately, walking off the plane, we began seeing all this stuff we’d seen in American movies. Everything impressed me. Even silly things, like those white marker pencils where you tear the string to write — we had nothing like that at home.
“And oh my God, room service! They asked what I wanted to eat. I said a grilled cheese sandwich might be nice. They order over the phone, it’s delivered to your room in just minutes. Unheard of! Unbelievable!”
In a calmer voice, he continued. “I was thrilled with America, but remember, I came from a very provincial town. I was a wide-eyed, 23-year-old, young kid, but, after being exposed to America, I wanted it.”
Nash would become an American citizen. Years later, he would leave the convenience of Los Angeles and move to the northern island in Hawaii.
The Hawaii move
That move was sparked by a billboard in San Francisco that declared: Shower With a Friend!”
The reference to a water shortage bothered Nash. Although Nash maintains a dwelling in Los Angeles, his home is in Hawaii, and he does not mind sharing why.
“I open my front door and I can see an 800-foot waterfall,” said Nash. “Where I live, the average rainfall is 435 inches per year, and the record was 690 inches.
“It’s practically a rainforest.
“When I was single it didn’t really matter. But I had told myself that whenever I got married and had children of my own, I did not want my kids to fear a water shortage. Between the availability of water and the beauty of this place, there’s no way I’d leave.”
Nash has devoted more than 40 years to making music as a solo artist and also with the Hollies and combinations of three, four and two: Crosby, Stills & Nash; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and now Crosby & Nash.
Looking back at the late 1960s, it was after meeting David Crosby that Nash wanted to write deeper songs than the three-minute pop hits with the Hollies.
And after singing with Crosby, who was in the Byrds, and Stephen Stills, connected to Buffalo Springfield, Nash decided to take a chance and leave what appeared to be certain fame and fortune with the Hollies.
Nash had an idea — and Crosby, Stills & Nash was born.
Joni Mitchell
Around the time CS&N was recording, Nash’s relationship with singer Joni Mitchell found them living together — and the bliss he felt came through when he wrote “Our House” for her, right down to the “two cats in the yard.”
Nash’s interest in photography and prints also was influenced by his youth in Britain. He said, “As a child, I never saw one image on the wall at home.”
So he began collecting unusual prints in his spare time. He devoted years to visiting flea markets and galleries. His wife, Susan, he said, finally could not open a kitchen drawer without finding more photographs.
In 1990, he sold 2,000 prints through Sotheby’s auction house. It set a record for the highest grossing sale of a single private collection of photography.
He stated, quite frankly, that he “needed a couple million dollars” to keep up with the digital revolution.
“I saw the trend coming. I saw the digital train moving at us like a bullet.”
Working with his former tour manager, R. Mac Holbert, and with help from Disney color engineer David Coons, Nash solved all output problems for his own well-received show of large photographic prints.
He still remembers “buying an Iris Graphics 3047 inkjet printer for $126,000, then taking it home and voiding out the warranty in a couple hours.”
That printer now is in the Smithsonian.
In 1990, he co-founded Nash Editions, the first professional, fine-art, digital print-making studio.
When Nash was asked to be guest curator and choose photos for the “Taking Aim” exhibit now at the Buddy Holly Center, he said, “I went through thousands of books. I left out some important images, because I couldn’t show everything. But what I wanted to show was the energy of rock ’n’ roll.
“It could be a calm energy, like that sad photograph of Buddy asleep on that Greyhound bus during the winter tour, or unleashed energy like the picture of Elton John almost leap-frogging over the piano.”
Nash admires those devoted to music.
Todd Caldwell
Lubbock musician Todd Caldwell joined Crosby, Stills & Nash as a keyboardist more than a year ago.
Nash was quick to say, “Todd is a champion. I love this boy. I do. I love this boy because he has ‘it.’
“He has the right attitude. Todd doesn’t give a (darn) about anything except the music. He has what it takes.”
Nash and Crosby have started their own music label and presently tour together.
“I love singing with David (Crosby),” said Nash. “He is truly an original musician. Our latest tour (40-plus shows) was a joy, and in September we go to Europe for 20 more.”
When they play at Royal Albert Hall, he noted, it will be Nash’s first time back in London “since Her Majesty gave me the OBE (Office of the Order of the British Empire) at Buckingham Palace.”
The younger Graham Nash never expected to visit Carnegie Hall, much less Buckingham Palace. He never expected to write songs, like “Our House” and “Teach Your Children,” that would become classics standing the test of time.
Much later, he would learn that he has his mother to thank.
He told Crosby this story during a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
”I asked my mother why she let me run off with musicians,” said Nash. Because my friends’ parents slapped them around and told them they would (darn) sure work in the mines, or the mill, like their fathers and their grandfathers before them.
“And my mother told me, ‘I never did that, because there was a time when I wanted to be a singer. But I married your father, I had you. I stayed here.
“So you see, you are living the life and seeing the places I always wanted to see.”
Nash paused, then leaned toward the microphone and whispered to Crosby that, each time he performs at a venue he thinks his mother would have loved, he makes certain to drop a pinch or two of his mother’s ashes on the stage.

Buddy Holly
All star tribute to the rock legend

June 8, 2011 | By Rolling Stone
In this brief documentary celebrating the release of the new tribute album Rave OnBuddy Holly, stars such as Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Nick Lowe and Jon Brion discuss Holly's classic songs and his impact on the history of rock music.
The video also includes sneak previews of Holly covers from the compilation by Paul McCartney, Fiona Apple, My Morning Jacket, Cee Lo Green, Florence + the Machine, the Black Keys and more.
Members of the public and the Lubbock City Council attended a ribbon cutting for the opening of the Buddy & Maria Elena Holly Plaza Monday afternoon. The new statue location sits at 1824 Crickets Avenue West, combined with the Texas Walk of Fame which was also relocated to the plaza.
Buddy Holly's widow, Maria Elena Holly was at the ribbon cutting ceremony. "He would have been honored like I am to have this project come to fruition," Holly said.
Maria Elena, says while she is thrilled to be included in the name of the plaza, she didn't request it.
"I said you know I would be happy if its just Buddy Holly. I appreciate it and I'm honored that I'm going to be there too, but my thought right away was its enough for it just to have Buddy's name," Holly explained.
However Councilman Paul R. Beane insisted her name be included on the title. "I insisted that her name be along with that of her late husband to honor her for her work in keeping Buddy's name alive for more than half a century," Beane said.
Buddy Holly's 1959 death was felt around the world, but his ties to Lubbock made him especially well known here.
"He was very proud of Lubbock, I remember seeing some interviews he did. You could always see that he was so proud to say I'm from Lubbock," Holly continued.
Maria Elena says Lubbock will always hold strong memories for her. "I came here to Lubbock to get married at his home," Holly said.
City Councilman Paul Beane says the statue is in the perfect location at what he calls the entrance to the city.
"With Buddy facing his Buddy Holly Center this is where the statues always belonged in my view," Beane said.
When Maria Elena saw the new location for the first time, she was overwhelmed. "It's beautiful, so very very nice. To me its an honor that they put him here and people will come from all over to see this," Holly said.
Mrs. Holly says the thing that mattered the most to Buddy was making music for his fans. "He always said , 'I'm doing this for the people that love my music to enjoy it' and that's one of the things that actually happened and is still happening."
