Excellent Buddy Holly Painting

                             BUDDY  HOLLY

Here is an excerpt from 2 e-mails I received from Lubbock Texas.

Many thanks to JACQUIE BOBER (BUDDY HOLLY CENTER) !

Hello Hans,

I have visited your buddyhollylives website on several occasions and

can readily see your devotion to all things related to Buddy Holly and

the Crickets.

You make a worthwhile contribution to the continued fan interest in

Buddy and his music.

I'm responding to your request for information regarding his

subsequent plans to return to Lubbock to establish a recording in a

new home he had contracted with his father to build.

There is some documentation about that time in Buddy’s life, but not

very much.

I have attached an page of information researched and put together

by my former assistant, Louise Tremblay

Sincerely,

Jacquie Bober

There is evidence that Buddy Holly was planning to return to Lubbock

after a period living in New York City, which began in the fall of 1958.

According to Buddy Holly expert Bill Griggs, Ella Holley said her son was

planning to spend two years in New York City to build connections in the

music business and expected to return to Lubbock sometime in 1960. As

New York City was then considered the center of the music world, and

was the home of his new wife Maria Elena and her family, his desire to

live there is understandable.

In 1958 Buddy purchased two pieces of land in Lubbock. His first

purchase, made in February of 1958, was a lot in the Bobalet Heights

development, located at the southeast corner of the intersection of

Vicksburg Avenue and 22nd Street.  The lot (#43E) in Bobalet Heights

was purchased for $5700 and Buddy entered into an agreement with his

father, L.O. Holley, to have a house built on the property. A promissory

note between father and son for $55,000 was executed by the Lubbock

National Bank on August 11, 1958.

Lubbock architect Don L. Kittrell drew up a set of house plans for lot

#43E, dated August 20, 1958, for a project named “A Residence for Mr.

& Mrs. L. O. Holley”. The architect’s plans are for a three bedroom, four

bathroom residence, featuring an open floor plan living space and a

separate wing with a recording studio and its own bathroom. The

bedrooms are labeled “Master Bed Room”, “Buddy’s Bed Room” and

“Guest Bed Room.”

In December of 1958, Holly purchased a second house lot, this one

located at 4201 41st Street in Lubbock. No purchase price was mentioned

and no house plans have surfaced related to this property. The lot was

resold in July of 1959 for $2,000.

At the time of Buddy’s death neither lot had been developed. Both

properties were sold by his heirs.

PRISM RECORDS BUSINESS CARD

In September of 1958 Buddy formed Prism Records. A checking account

was established on September 23rd at the Clovis National Bank, with the

address on the checks corresponding to one of Norman Petty’s business

addresses. Shipping labels were printed with the same address and

Petty’s studio phone number.

In documents related to Prism Records, Buddy is listed as “President,”

Ray Rush of the Roses is listed as “Promotion” and Norman Petty is listed

as “Sales”.

Two recording sessions under the Prism banner are known to have

happened in 1958: Waylon Jennings recorded two songs at Norman

Petty’s studio on September 10th and Lou Giordano recorded two songs

at Belton Studios in New York City on September 30th. For both sessions

Buddy played guitar. He was the producer on the Jennings session, and

co-produced the Giordano session with Phil Everly.

In addition to Prism Records, Buddy also planned to establish Taupe

Music Publishing, named after the color of his Cadillac, although little

documentation exists about this company.
