LARRY   WELBORN   DIED   AT   83

on Sunday, 31st of July, 2022

Larry Welborn - Different views

DURANT, Okla. (KXII) - The Texoma music community is mourning the loss of a giant who played with Buddy Holly, opened for Elvis, and counted one Waylon Jennings among his students. “He’s one of the reasons why music is what it is now, he was one of the pioneers of rock and roll music,” Friend of Larry Welborn Jayson Starkey said. In 1955, Larry Welborn helped create the Buddy, Bob, and Larry trio. “I remember Buddy Holly sitting on his knee and him singing, 'you ain’t nothing but a hound dog', ”

Larry’s Brother David Welborn said. The group opened for Elvis and toured on the Louisiana Hayride, where they then recorded “That’ll Be The Day,” a song Welborn didn’t get any money from until three years ago. “He made me slow down, he made me pay attention, when I first started playing with him- along with him, I was very green and I played a lot and he made me just slow down and pick my spots and listen while he played,” Starkey said. Larry taught many how to become a musician.

“Larry was the kind of person that could take five of the best musicians in the world and make an incredible band out of them but he could also take five of the worst musicians that you could imagine and put them together and make them sound like a pretty good band,” David said. Among his students, Waylon Jennings. “He was an amazing musician, I play drums and he taught me how to play, and he taught me how to be a musician that played the drums and not be just a drummer, and that’s a big difference,” Larry’s Nephew Sean Welborn said. Larry went on to join the Army, then moved home to Oklahoma, but the music never stopped along the way. “He loved everybody and loved what he did,” Starkey said.

THAT MAKES IT SOUND SO MUCH BETTER - BUDDY HOLLY on Rollercoaster Records

In 2011 many of us, me too, acquired this CD.

On the 27th of January, 2021, Rollercoaster Records added this to their website:

HOLLY, Buddy: That Makes It Sound So Much Better! CD Album Disc

THIS UPDATED RELEASE IS FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL RELEASE ............... NOTE THAT THIS IS THE CD ONLY WITH NO PACKAGING TO UPDATE YOUR EXISTING PACKAGE! See separate listing for a copy of this CD with the original CD packaging.......................... We have added new improved mixes and additional versions of the original tracks, PLUS the new version of Peggy Sue Got Married ... reuniting The Crickets with Buddy Holly for the first time since 1958. Buddy Holly with The Jack Hansen Combo: THAT MAKES IT SOUND SO MUCH BETTER - CD version. Buddy Holly's 'apartment tapes' are well-known, particularly the six songs he wrote in December 1958 and recorded on his Ampex 401A tape-recorder. These were heard first in the overdubbed versions produced by Jack Hansen in 1959 and 1960. Many fans prefer Buddy's original guitar and vocal demos to the later overdubbed versions. But the Jack Hansen versions - using some of New York's finest session musicians, who were never really a Combo - are still the ones that most fans remember. There were many flaws in the overdubbing, emphasised by the fact that Buddy Holly never envisaged the tracks he made being used to create commercial releases and thus did not stick to strict tempo timing. And the equipment used to mix the original 3-track tapes was primitive compared to today's computer-based technology. Modern technological advances have enabled us to remix the tracks and errors in timing have also been corrected by producer Chris Hopkins. Chris spent many hours on each track, creating the best versions you will ever hear of the six recordings. All have been remixed into mono and stereo versions ... you will hear instruments you never heard before and the overall quality will surprise you! The CD comes with a 36-page illustrated booklet with full details about the recordings and the re-mastering process. 2020 remix master Note that tracks are arranged so that the songs can be played without the count-ins and studio chatter.

More  about  the  Hologram  Tour

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Do  you  remember ??

The last message on the 'old' website in BUDDY HOLLY NEWS 6 was about the Hologram Tour,

which is currently going through England, Wales, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.

Buddy Holly News 6 about the Hologram Tour

Personally I was and am not happy with the pictorial presentation of my idol Buddy Holly. Every Buddy Holly fan can see

that this is not Buddy Holly, neither in appearance nor in movement. Why this project was approached so blue-eyed remains

a mystery to me.

More and more videos are appearing on the internet, which offer a foretaste of what visitors

can expect for a high entrance fee of over 80 € per person.

On 10-28-2019 the tour will stop in Essen / Germany, at the Colosseum Theater.

Exactly there, where I had a joint performance on German TV with Maria Elena Holly in 2009.
