Sorry I couldn't contact you sooner, but I don't have internet. I am over here at Sherry Holley's house.

TUT MIR LEID, ICH KONNTE DICH NICHT FRÜHER KONTAKTIEREN, WEIL ICH KEIN INTERNET HABE. ICH BIN GERADE HIER DRÜBEN IN SHERRY HOLLEY'S HAUS.

I met Buddy after I went to work for his Dad as a carpenter's helper. I was 15 and Buddy was 13. I got my guitar one day and was playing and Mr. Holley said his son played a little guitar too, so Buddy and I got together and started playing music together.

NACHDEM ICH FÜR SEINEN VATER SCHREINERHILFSARBEITEN GEMACHT HATTE, TRAF ICH BUDDY. ICH WAR 15 UND BUDDY WAR 13. EINES TAGES NAHM ICH MIR MEINE GITARRE UND SPIELTE DARAUF. HERR HOLLEY SAGTE, DASS SEIN SOHN AUCH EIN WENIG GITARRE SPIELTE. SO KAMEN BUDDY UND ICH ZUSAMMEN UND BEGANNEN, ZUSAMMEN MUSIK ZU MACHEN.

My sister contacted High Pockets Duncan and told him that her brother and a friend of his (Buddy), played guitars & sung together & would be great for the radio. They started the Sat. Nite Jamboree on KDAV Radio. After that we started the Buddy & Jack Show on Sun. afternoons. This took place in 1952.

MEINE SCHWESTER NAHM KONTAKT MIT HIGH POCKETS DUNCAN AUF UND ERZÄHLTE IHM, DASS IHR BRUDER UND EINER SEINER FREUNDE (BUDDY) ZUSAMMEN GITARRE SPIELTEN UND SANGEN UND WAS TOLLES FÜR'S RADIO WÄREN. SIE BEGANNEN MIT DER SATURDAY NITE JAMBOREE BEI KDAV RADIO. DANACH MACHTEN WIR DIE BUDDY & JACK SHOW AM SONNTAGNACHMITTAG. DIES GESCHAH 1952.

This is a great site! Thank you Hans for keeping the music alive.

DIES IST EINE GROSSARTIGE SEITE! DANKE, HANS, DASS DU UNSERE MUSIK HOCHHÄLTST.

There are still many people living in Lubbock who knew Buddy Holly well.

Among them is former musician and disc jockey Jack Neal, who was Buddy

Holly’s first musical partner on a local radio show.

He sat in on jam sessions with Holly and a young rock singer from Memphis,

Tennessee named Elvis Presley, just months before Elvis went on to become

a legend himself.

“I truly believe that if Buddy had still been living, he would have been as big

as Elvis, if not bigger, because of the two different styles of people that

they were,” Neal said.

"ICH GLAUBE AUFRICHTIG, DASS BUDDY, WÜRDE ER NOCH LEBEN, GENAU

SO BERÜHMT WIE ELVIS WÄRE, WENN NICHT NOCH BERÜHMTER, WEIL BEIDE

ZWEI UNTERSCHIEDLICHE CHARAKTERE WAREN", SAGE JACK NEAL.

Neal knew Buddy Holly as a close friend as well as an artist, and he misses

him still. He recalls one of his last conversations with him, not long before

he died.

“He was in town and we were at one of the drive-ins and it was just before

he left to go on that last tour and he said he wanted people to know Buddy

Holly,”

Neal recalled. “He wanted them to know the name. He said the money was

nice, but he wanted people to know the name. And so that was his goal and

that is exactly what he did.”

The fatal plane crash in Iowa was commemorated in 1973 by singer/songwriter

Don McLean in his hit song, “American Pie,” which spoke of “the day the music

died.”

But most Buddy Holly fans say his music never died and that it

lives on in the rock and roll he helped create.

September KDAV radio begins broadcasting what is considered the first

all-country music format in the United States. The Sunday Party aired by

Hipockets Duncan, a disc jockey and talent scout, gives local musicians

an opportunity to perform live. Buddy teams with Jack Neal to form the

duo Buddy and Jack, and their show is broadcast live from KDAV during

The Sunday Party.

November

At KDAV, Buddy and Jack record an acetate of

I Hear the Lord Callin' For Me, and I Saw The Moon Cry Last Night.
